Register for the 2025/26 RXCSF Bill Koch Youth Nordic Skiing program!
The RXCSF youth program introduces children in 8th grade and under to cross country skiing in a fun and supportive environment.
Our youngest registrants are typically at least 5 years old. They need some amount of stamina, and tolerance of the cold. We do expect parents to be out there with our group, whether on skis or not, to help motivate their younger/beginner skiers. This is not a drop-and-go event.
Our goals are to have fun in the snow, develop cross-country skiing skills, and build a life-long love of the sport, while fostering a supportive team atmosphere.
We do this through games, drills, low-key races and several festivals with other Bill Koch League clubs. We offer a mix of introductory racing and non-competitive skiing activities, and encourage skiers to explore them all.
Registrants will be groups by age/ability, and assigned appropriate coaches. All of our volunteer coaches are SafeSport certified by US Ski and Snowboard.
Plan on joining us this winter, every Saturday from 12/6/25 to 2/28/26 at 1:00pm, for xc skiing, fun, and community.
Our first practice will be Saturday, December 6, 2025 at 1:00pm. We will set the location the week before, but assume that this will be a dryland practice. Registering is the easiest way to ensure you are getting accurate practice location information. With variable snow conditions throughout the year, we chase the snow and try to show our families what our region has to offer Nordic skiers.
Last year roughly half our practices ended up being held at the Bristol Mountain Summit center.
Bristol has guaranteed snow once their man-made snow loop is constructed, and offers a warming hut and bathroom facilities.
Unlike our county and state park locations, Bristol charges a fee. Season passes are available through the Bristol website, and day passes are available in the warming hut. Last year, RXCSF offered to purchase Bristol passes for all of our families. Our number of registrants increased from less than 15 in 2023-24 to 54 in 2024-25, and it is not sustainable to offer passes for all our families. This year, RXCSF is willing to purchase participant passes on a needs basis. If your family needs assistance in purchasing a Bristol pass for your registered child/children, please reach out to me (Chris Kvam) directly, and this will be handled discreetly.
We are holding an informational meeting on November 15, at 4:00pm at the West Lodge in Mendon Ponds Park. All families and kids are invited, please invite interested friends.
If we don’t have early season snow, registered kids are encouraged to attend early season dry land sessions, as they are easy ways to start building community, hand out gear, and get excited for winter.
Speaking of gear! If you need any skis boots or poles, RXCSF has a lot of gear available for free seasonal loan. If you already know your child’s size, please email your needs. If you don’t know your child’s boot/ski size, you are encouraged to come to our informational meeting, the HFL ski swap, and our early season gear distribution so that we are ready when the snow arrives.
All youth families are encouraged to join NYSSRA Nordic. NYSSRA underwrites our insurance, and does a lot to support and facilitate youth skiing in NY. If you intend to be a volunteer coach, you must join and complete the SafeSport background check
Please visit Nyssranordic.org to sign up for nyssra.
